Pam GloverPam's Challenge No. 1 - Easter Monday, 21st April, 2003

To cheers from a large crowd in front of the Rose and Crown, Pam Glover set off to walk one mile, a not so easy challenge when your body doesn't quite respond as it does for any ordinary person. But Pam is no ordinary person, as many people in Wivenhoe know.

Pam's walk should have raised well over £1,000 towards the cost of installing a 'disabled' toilet in the Wivenhoe Congregational Church, for which she is Secretary. [Note: The final amount raised was around a staggering £4,800].

Town Mayor, Cllr David Craze, started her walk at 1.30pm with a fewTown Mayor, Cllr David Craze, walking with Pam Glover well chosen words and accompanied her on the walk around the lower part of Wivenhoe. Also walking with her was a great throng of people, including Brian O'Dell who had been responsible for much of the organising of the day as well as getting the support of First Great Eastern and Bovis Homes which companies had paid for the publicity.

The Ramblers and Jan Sinclair were there providing a musical accompaniment to help her on the way round.

Harriet Scott and Poppy TaylorApart from people helping Pam by sponsoring her effort, other fund-raising efforts were also in place. Barry from the Village Delicatessen was running a raffle with a star prize of a weekend for two; John Ashworth had a stall outside his house, by the Church, the half-way point for Pam. Pam's father was running a stall providing home-made beer!

Two girls, Harriett Scott and Poppy Taylor had baked some cakes that morning which they sold, raising £27 between them, for Pam's good cause.

Richard Edwardson, from Londis Supermarket, donated 30 Easter Eggs, some of which were given as prizes to those who had come wearing an Easter Bonnet, like Harriett and Poppy. The remainder were sold, raising yet more money for Pam's Challenge.

The weather was kind to Pam and everyone else who enjoyed the carnival atmosphere on the Quay.  Well done Pam. Hope you raised lots of money.
