Jacqui Dankworth - 24 January - kicks off the new season of Jazz at the Lakeside

Beat the winter blues with another sizzling hot season of Jazz at the Lakeside this coming spring with three very special concerts featuring some of the top names on the UK jazz scene, presented by Wivenhoe based music promoter SEGUE MUSIC.

The season kicks off on Saturday 24th January with a very special concert from the undisputed “Princess of Jazz” Jacqui Dankworth and her fine band, which launches her national tour. Daughter of Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth, Jacqui’s musical pedigree is in no doubt, however, it was several years before she was persuaded to take up the microphone. With two award winning albums behind her, Jacqui is now touring the UK throughout 2009 with material from a new record, a group of the finest British musicians and a show not to be missed. Her live concert draws on all kinds of influences including Jazz, Soul, Folk and Blues. She is accompanied by her outstanding band comprising Piano, Drums, Bass and also featuring local man Chris Allard on guitar. Book early for what promises to be one of the hottest tickets in town.

“She’s simply wonderful” – Michael Parkinson

Tickets are priced at £18 (£16 concessions).

Next-up is Tim Garland’s “Lighthouse Project” on Saturday 21st February. Born out of Garland’s award winning project from 2005 “If The Sea Replied” which involved magical recorded solo improvisations inside a lighthouse, the trio has become Garlands main focus for live performance.

The core trio features Tim Garland on saxes and bass clarinet, Lakeside favourite Asaf Sirkis – playing a custom built percussion set of frame drums, bass Udu, Hang drum and more, and celebrated and award winning young pianist Gwilym Simcock. Together they are an orchestra unto themselves and their music combines a range of rhythms from the Middle East, Spain and South America with highly interactive and lyrical jazz.

“Sure-footed virtuosity ... a dazzling standard”. The Times

Tickets are priced at £12 / £8 (concessions).

The final concert of the season on Saturday 21st March is the Ingrid Laubrock Quintet led by BBC Jazz Award winner Ingrid Laubrock on soprano and tenor sax and including Basquiat Strings improvising cellist Ben Davis; Stuart Richie on drums, as well as, pianist Barry Green and double bassist Larry Bartley.

The stellar line-up, described as ‘heavenly’ by Chris May of ‘All About Jazz’, made a deep impression at last years’ Cheltenham Jazz Festival where they played to a sold out house on two consecutive days. Through years of playing together, this quintet has achieved an almost mystical degree of interaction and interplay; and while much emphasis is on improvisation, the musicians never loose track of Ingrid Laubrock’s compositions. Tickets are priced at £12 / £8 (concessions).

For all shows, doors open at 8pm and concerts start at 8.30pm. Tickets are available from the box office on 01206 573 948  or at: www.mercurytheatre.co.uk/artson5
