Creative Percussion Workshop
and concert with master percussionist Adriano
Adewale Saturday 7th February

|
A creative percussion workshop led by master percussionist
Adriano Adewale takes place on Saturday 7th February from 2.30 - 4.30pm at
the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Essex, prior to an evening concert
by the Adriano Adewale Group presented by Eastern Roots.
Organised by Wivenhoe based Segue Music, the workshop will explore an
Afro-Brazilian style of music called Igexa, which was taken to Brazil by the
Nigerians. It is usually played in religious ceremonies and carnival parades
by a group of people who gather together playing a varied set of percussion
instruments, alongside dancing and singing in chorus.
Participants will have a chance to explore the percussion techniques of
instruments such as congas, shakers, agogo bells, gourds, and afoxes, which
will then lead to a an arrangement of a final piece involving the whole
ensemble playing and singing a traditional song.
In addition to that, participants will be encouraged to have a creative
input by finding new ways to play percussion (conventional and non
conventional instruments) and use their voices in a non conventional way,
exploring and inventing percussive sounds.
The workshop is open to all ages and abilities and although instruments will
be provided, participants are encouraged to bring along their own drums,
shakers and, of course, voices. Please reserve or book in advance for the
workshop by contacting Fiona Mason, Segue Music, Tel: 01206 825600
fiona@segue.org.uk Tickets are £10 and £5 for concessions.
Join Adriano and his band for a concert in the evening (concert starts at
8.30pm doors 8pm). Throw aside preconceived musical prejudices, abandon all
attempts to catalogue: a rich chemistry of cultural influences is at work
when the Adriano Adewale Group take to the stage. Rooted in the musical
traditions of Nigeria, Angola and Brazil and infused with contemporary
European classical and jazz styles, Adewale's music is a colourful cocktail
of infectiously funky rhythms and intimate soulful ballads peppered with
free-jazz improvisation.
Touring to support the release of their debut album SEMENTES (Segue Records
2008) the group features Afro-Brazilian Adriano Adewale on percussion and
vocals, Australian Nathan Riki Thomson on double bass and flutes; Kadialy
Kouyate from Senegal on Kora and vocals and fellow Brazilian Marcelo Andrade
on sax, flutes and rabeca.
