Appeal To Raise Money To Bring Water To Kenyans

When you next turn the tap on to get a glass of water, remember how blessed you are. Not everyone in the world is as fortunate as people in the UK . Many have to walk miles to fetch clean water.

A Kenyan woman is raising funds for a well in her mother’s village.

Last year, Kenya suffered a severe drought, which killed crops and animals. People were starving as the cost of food rose and resorted to eating unripe mangoes and meat cut from a donkey killed in a road accident.

Mwikali Kavivya, 32, who lives and works in Wivenhoe, has been given a quote of £2,300 to drill a borehole.

“I am raising money to dig a borehole for my mum’s village, Kakuli,” she said. She and the other villagers have to walk a mile to fetch water from the river every day during the rainy season. In the dry season, they have to walk eight miles to the nearest borehole. They have to queue, sometimes all day. They are only allowed to fetch 80 litres of water at a time, which has to be used sparingly.

Mwikali has already raised £850 towards the appeal by running a Rotary Club half marathon in Brentwood (above).

The borehole needs to be dug in the dry season between July and September, so we need to act quickly.

Wivenhoe resident, Sally Anderson-Wai, the editor of TV4Life said: “It would be fantastic if people will help us raise money for a well in Kakuli village.”

Anyone who wants to make a donation to the appeal can send a cheque payable to TV4Life in an envelope addressed to: TV4Life Appeal, 10, St Peters Court , Colchester, Essex , CO1 1WD , UK .

A tabletop sale is being held for the “Get A Well Soon For Kenya” appeal at Wivenhoe Methodist Church on Saturday May 15th between 10am and 1pm. There will be various stalls including plants, toys, books, cakes, bric-a-brac, nearly new, and games. Lunches will be served and a lady will be doing hair and another will be doing nails. Please attend.
