Colchester
Borough Council's Leisure Services have been successful in attracting £58,000
from the Essex Rural Renaissance Fund and £15,000 from Cory Environmental
Trust for arts, recreational activities and facilities in Tiptree,
Wivenhoe and West Mersea.
The
project aims to use the arts as a tool for engaging rural communities
across a range of service areas including countryside development,
playgrounds, sports, museum outreach and tourism.
There
are a range of exciting activities planned to take place involving local
community groups and school children.
Three
dimensional artist Sarah Sabin and multi-media based artist Catherine
Watling will be working in Wivenhoe this Spring to produce a unique mobile
display resource.
| The
special upturned boat shaped cabinet, made with the help and skills of
Fabian Bush from the Nottage Institute, will contain a ‘virtual’
exhibition of artworks and objects made by the hands of local people from
Wivenhoe inspired by the Town’s maritime heritage. A series of magical
drawers, portholes and lit displays will bring the cabinet and artworks to
life for all to enjoy.
The ease of access to the PC inside the cabinet
will provide a potential ‘on-line link’ for people in rural areas to
access websites and information at Colchester’s Museum.

The upturned boat, made by
Fabian Bush, at the official launch of Rec-Create at Wivenhoe
Library on Saturday, 24th April, 2004. |
Children
from Millfield and Broomgrove schools will be working with residents from
Britannia Court and Stuart Pawsey residential homes in Wivenhoe, to
capture stories and heritage between the two generations for the enjoyment
of a wider audience in the future.
Local
historian Elizabeth Baines and Colchester Museum’s social history team
are working together with staff from Wivenhoe Library to collate unusual
objects and photographs of Wivenhoe for the artists to use as inspiration
for creating artwork with those children and adults involved.
The
cabinet, is aimed to be completed before the end of April, when there will
be a special opening event on 24 April at Wivenhoe Library to celebrate
the work of all those people who will have been involved and unveil the
new resource.
The
magical boat will then be on for display in other rural areas of and Essex
as a mobile resource, enabling other smaller museums across the county to
find out more about Colchester’s unique maritime heritage. A great
opportunity to celebrate our fine cultural town past and present!
If
you would like to become involved with the project, put forward a story
about the town, create prints and photographs or bring in unique and
relevant objects for inspiration….
A
series of ‘Drop-In Sessions’ with the artists will be taking place at
the British Legion Hall, Wivenhoe on Saturday 14 February and Monday 16
February, 11 – 4pm.
The
sessions will be free of charge, but if you would like to guarantee a
place, please telephone Arts Development on 01206 282917.
