The Wivenhoe Encyclopedia

Built around 1902 as a Goods Shed, replacing an earlier building which was destroyed by fire, it became a Grade ll listed building in the 1980s and sits within Wivenhoe's Conservation area, on one side of the Wivenhoe railway station car park.

It has been derelict for most of the period since 1964.

It will be restored as an old railway building.

The 'Engine Shed' Despite its appearance, the structure of the building is sound.

It offers plenty of height for a variety of activities.

Long term an extension is planned for this side which could provide meeting rooms and space to broaden the potential of this building to be a significant asset for the eastern side of Colchester.

A few car parking spaces can also be included to accommodate day time use. Most activities though will take place in the evenings and at weekends, when the main car park is not being used by rail commuters.

Inside the 'Engine Shed' Imagine the roof timbers and brickwork cleaned up, the old platform inside removed to provide level access throughout the ground floor. Space for meetings, lectures, exhibitions and that's without the extension which will make the building achieve its full potential.

It is substantially bigger than Wivenhoe's existing public hall which is shared by many community organisations.

With its wonderful transport links, by bus, rail and at the end of the Wivenhoe~Hythe~Colchester Cycle Trail, this will be a superb asset for the Borough of Colchester and not just for Wivenhoe.
