20th May, 2003 - Engine Shed Project gets £75,000 grant

The Railway Heritage Trust has given the Project a grant of £75,000 to help kick start the fund-raising effort to raise over £500,000 to restore and extend the old railway building in Wivenhoe railway station car park to create a major Arts Centre for the area.

Wivenhoe Town Council has been negotiating a 999 year lease on the building offered by Railtrack for a nominal £1 provided the building is used for community purposes. The Wivenhoe Community Association will eventually manage it and will hire out the building to as wide a variety of arts groups in the Borough as possible. The range of arts activities being considered include dance, film, painting, singing, music, opera, puppetry and could include lectures as well as workshop and classes.
