Wivenhoe Woods

They are a special place. They require looking after so that they can be enjoyed. A small part is owned by Wivenhoe Town Council, being the part closest to King George V Playing Fields. The greater part is owned by Colchester Borough Council.

In 2002, the Woods were designated part of the Colne Nature Reserve.

Note:  Do you ever see sections of the Woods looking like this? Whilst they look dreadful in the weeks which follow, have a look a couple of years later. Almost all of the Wivenhoe Woods have been coppiced in this way over the last 20 years, a procedure once commonplace in our woods in their early days.   This practice lets light into the woods allowing insects, birds and flowers to flourish, and in consequence they become much healthier in the long run.
