| Wivenhoe's War Memorial
Details
Wivenhoe's war memorial is inscribed with the names of
those Wivenhoe people who lost their lives in the service of the country
in the first and second World Wars, plus also the husband of a Wivenhoe
girl who was killed in Northern Ireland.
It is believed that Beatrice Varrow, widow of George Ernest
Varrow, paid for the Memorial in 1921. George Varrow, Sapper 164966,
from General Base Depot, Royal Engineers, died in the 6th General
Hospital in Rouen, France, on 18th February, 1917, aged 29 years. He
was born in Sudbury, and after marrying Beatrice, lived at "The
Firs," High Street, Wivenhoe. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension,
Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France. Grave O. V. I. 5.
A plaque to his memory is on the wall of St Mary's Church but it
is not known why his name does not appear on the Memorial. It is
included though in the Roll of Honour at his old school, Soham
Grammar School. Click here
for the link to the Soham Grammar School Roll of Honour web page.
The Memorial is inscribed with many names. Details
of three of these people have been written up. Click on their names
below to find out more about them.
