6th May, 2005 - War Memorial Fund Launched by Town Mayor and Wivenhoe British Legion

On Sunday, at Wivenhoe's VE Commemoration Service at the Congregational Church, Cllr Peter Hill, Town Mayor, and Patrick Baxter, Chairman of the Wivenhoe branch of the Royal British Legion, launched a fund to raise £3,250 to pay for much needed cleaning, and repairs to the base of Wivenhoe's War Memorial in St Mary's churchyard.

Cllr Peter Hill said: "If we raise more than the required amount, the balance will go to Halsey House, the British Legion care home at Cromer so that the Fund will be used to respect the fallen as well as help the living".

£240 from the collection taken at the VE service was used to kick-start the Appeal.  The Appeal was boosted a few days later by a £500 grant from the Mayor's Charity Fund, a donation of £120 from the Wivenhoe Services Club and £40 from the Monday Club.

Patrick Baxter and Peter Hill hope that people in the Wivenhoe community will donate to this Appeal. Wivenhoe Town Council will administer the Appeal Fund.

Note:  War Memorial Fund raises £4,678. The Memorial is renovated in time for the Remembrance Service in November 2005 and a cheque for £1,000 is presented to Halsey House. Click on pages below for full story.

Footnote:

It is believed that Beatrice Varrow, widow of George Ernest Varrow, paid for the Memorial in 1921. George Varrow, Sapper 164966, from General Base Depot, Royal Engineers, died in the 6th General Hospital in Rouen, France, on 18th February, 1917, aged 29 years. He was born in Sudbury, and after marrying Beatrice, lived at "The Firs," High Street, Wivenhoe. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France. Grave O. V. I. 5.

A plaque to his memory is on the wall of St Mary's Church but it is not known why his name does not appear on the Memorial. It is included though in the Roll of Honour at his old school, Soham Grammar School. Click here for the link to the Soham Grammar School Roll of Honour web page.
