Beating the Bounds

Dear Walker,

Thank you for supporting this venture in aid of The Mayor’s Charity Fund. I am sure you know that The Mayors Charity provides much needed support for community activities in Wivenhoe itself.

Why ‘Beating the Bounds’ ?  The tradition of beating the bounds was a method of ensuring that all local youngsters knew the limits of their Parish. This came from a time when no one, except the rich, could leave the Parish without permission.  The activity took place at or near Ascension Day, which follows 40 days on from Easter Day.

Traditionally, the event involved choir boys, the Parish Clerk and clergymen leaving from the church, Parish Hall or school with wands or sticks. They would then process around the Parish where, at points on the boundary, they would beat flagstones, walls or hedges with the sticks. It does appear that sometimes the youngsters were actually beaten with the sticks to reinforce the message. (We won’t be doing that today).

General Rules for the day.

Make sure that you have some strong walking boots and enough clothing to account for changes in the weather. Have you got a High Visibility garment to wear for use on the road section?

It is advisable to carry some water to keep yourself hydrated. However, a coffee stop is planned at The Horse & Groom.

There will be suitable stops for viewing points of interest. If you only want to walk to half distance, you can leave the group at Wivenhoe Cross.

Children should be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult.

The leaders will be carrying First Aid equipment and mobile phones.

The route finishes at The Black Buoy. The licensee will have suitable refreshment available for purchase.

In the latter stages of the walk, the route is via Keelers Lane and Alresford Road. Both carry a fair volume of traffic. In particular in Alresford Road which is a ‘bus route. Care will be needed along these sections.

Disclaimer.

The organisers will prepare for this event as comprehensively as they can but cannot accept liability for any accident or loss incurred by those taking part.
