| April 2007 - Wivenhoe Woods Working Party
An update by Cllr
Brian Sinclair
Members of the volunteer
group met on Sunday 15th April 2007 under the direction of
Richard Moulson, our Colchester Ranger.
The task this time was to clear the Easy Access Path from Rosabelle
Car Park to the picnic area.
It was very hot and in a
short time there were cries of “Isn’t it time the kettle was on?”
Eight volunteers cleared, swept and replaced tarmac to damaged edges as
well as replacing the worst of the wooden edging.
Anyone noticing us
removing some of the car park fencing should not report this as vandalism. We were recycling, as we needed some stakes to retain the
edging. The car park fencing
is due for maintenance or removal at some time and our actions were all
part of the plan.
Working with the volunteer
group is a good way to have some fresh air and exercise as well as meet
new people. Some of the
volunteers have extensive knowledge of wildlife and woodland management so
it is also a good way to gain a greater understanding of why woodland
management and coppicing, an ancient skill, is so essential.
It is always useful to have an idea of how many volunteers are
going to appear, because too large a group would be difficult to manage.
However, don’t be put off by that.
So far there has always been enough work for everyone.
Future planned tasks are
the construction of a section of boardwalk on the lower path where it is
always very muddy, clearance of access paths to Lower Lodge field and
continued management of Sycamore trees where they are invading and
swamping out other species.
