Wivenhoe Shops Support Group

The aim of this group is to:

1. To reduce the carbon footprint of local people by making fewer car journeys out of Wivenhoe for shopping

2. Encourage local people to use the local shops (and eventually services) rather than going to an out-of-town supermarket. This will help boost the local economy. It will also encourage local shops to both diversify and extend their product range.

3. To encourage more shops to open in Wivenhoe, particularly 'core' shops (greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers). It is hope that this effect will snowball with a critical mass of shops being reached. This aim was particularly popular amongst those residents surveyed and features in the Town Plan 2008 .

4. To help sustain and expand the local economy. To try and keep local money flowing through the local economy. This will in turn encourage more local employment and training. Reducing ‘economic leakage’ from the town will allow for economic growth from the virtuous cycle that economists call the ‘multiplier effect’ .
