Remembrance Day in Wivenhoe
The weather was bright and the morning's chill
breeze had died away by the afternoon when Wivenhoe held its Remembrance
Services. It was the turn of the
Congregational Church to host the Wivenhoe Remembrance Service with around
150 people assembled in the Wm Loveless Hall for the Young People's
Service.
Prior to the commencement of the two services,
members of 1st Wivenhoe Scouts went to the Wivenhoe Cemeteries and laid
crosses on the war graves.
Whilst Town Mayor, Cllr Penny Kraft attended the
main service along with MP Bernard Jenkin, other Town and Borough
Councillors, members of the Royal British Legion and many other people,
Deputy Mayor Cllr Dave Purdey and Anne Jenkin attended the Young People's
Service at which Beavers, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts, Guides and Explorer
Scouts read out thoughts about war, read prayers and poems they had
written, or played war-time music in the case of the Explorer
Scouts.
After the services, the Colchester Boys Brigade
Band led everyone to the War Memorial in St Mary's Churchyard where, after
the list of Wivenhoe's fallen was read, the Exhortation given, and Last
Post sounded, Cllr Penny Kraft laid the first wreath, followed by Ralph
Moss from the Royal British Legion and wreaths from other organisations
including the Police and Scout and Guides.
After the short service around the War Memorial
conducted jointly by Rev David Thomas and Pastor Patrick Baxter, people
either went to the British Legion Hall for refreshments or to the William
Loveless Hall.
In the evening, St Mary's Singers performed Music
for Remembrance for which the main work was the 'Sparrow' Mass in C
major by Mozart with other choral music by John Rutter and Mendelssohn. The
singers were conducted by Director of Music, Graham Wadley, the organist
John Rippin and Amanda Arthur played the clarinet.
