Wivenhoe Remembrance Day
         -    Sunday 12th November, 2006

An invitation to participate

Please do come and participate in Wivenhoe's Annual Remembrance Day. Join members of the Royal British Legion Wivenhoe Branch, our MP, Town and Ward Councillors, Church Leaders, Scouts and Guides and others in various activities on this special day.

This year, the traditional Remembrance Service will be held in the Congregational Church, starting at 2.30pm. At the same time, the Wivenhoe Scout & Guide Association will be holding a Young People's Act of Remembrance in the William Loveless Hall. There is an open invitation for all young people to join this service at which members of Wivenhoe's 10 Scout & Guide units will offer their thoughts about war and the affect of war on people's lives.

At the conclusion of these Services, the British Legion will be very pleased if you would join them in a procession from the Congregational Church to St Mary's Churchyard for the Service at the War Memorial.

Following this, there are invitations from the British Legion to go to their Hall on the Quay for a cup of tea, or possibly something stronger! Otherwise there is an invitation from the Town Council to follow Town Mayor, Cllr Penny Kraft, to the Wm Loveless Hall for a cup of tea there.

And, in the evening, at 7.30pm, in St Mary's Church, St Mary's Singers will perform a programme which will include the Mozart Missa Brevis in C (KV 220) ‘Spatzen Messe’ (or Sparrow Mass). Graham Wadley, Director of Music would be pleased to welcome all residents to this evening of reflective music and singing.

We have seen an increasing number of people attending the Service and especially standing around the War Memorial which is wonderful.  This occasion is not just to remember the lives and the ultimate sacrifice paid by Wivenhoe people in the conflicts of the last century, so that they will not be forgotten, but a time to also reflect upon the continuing tragedy of war which still continues in so many parts of the world today. Then there are those who have been killed or injured at the hands of terrorists.

I think this day is a special one. An opportunity to show we care, we have not forgotten the past and that we do want the world to become a more peaceable place. I believe wearing the poppy symbolises all these things.

Hopefully, one day, this will become a day when we will be able to celebrate peace in the world.

Cllr Peter Hill
