Wivenhoe's
Annual Service of Remembrance
-
Sunday 13th November, 2005
Come to Wivenhoe's Annual Service of Remembrance organised by the
Royal British Legion Wivenhoe Branch, joining with our MP, Town and Ward
Councillors, and a great many others in a traditional Act of Remembrance.
This year the Service will be
held in St Mary's Church on Sunday, 13th November, 2005, starting at
2.30pm.
The Legion will be very pleased if you would first join them in a
procession from the Congregational Church to St Mary's leaving the
Congregational Church at 2pm. This procession will be led by the
Colchester Boys Brigade Band.
The Service will be followed at 3.30pm by standing around the War
Memorial to hear read out the names of those Wivenhoe people who died in
conflicts in the last century.
An innovation this year is an invitation from the Town Council and the
British Legion for everybody to come to the Wm Loveless Hall afterwards
for refreshments.
Last year, we had a wonderful gathering of people at the Service, with
many Chairmen of Wivenhoe organisations responding to the invitations they
had received from the Wivenhoe Branch of the British Legion. They were
joined too by many more people who just responded to the general
invitation to come and participate in a Service of Remembrance.
This occasion is not just to remember the lives and the ultimate sacrifice paid by
Wivenhoe people in the conflicts of the last century, so that they will
not be forgotten, but a time to also reflect upon the continuing tragedy of war
which continues in so many parts of the world today. Then there are those
who have been killed or injured at the hands
of terrorists.
Can we say, and show, that the people of Wivenhoe really do care by
turning out for this Service.
Hopefully, one day, this will become a day when we will be able to
celebrate peace in the world.
A great many of Wivenhoe’s young people too will be standing around the
War Memorial following their Act of Remembrance that has been taking place
in the Wm Loveless Hall now for the past several years. During their
own Service in the Wm Loveless Hall, they will be expressing their
thoughts about war and their hopes for peace. See picture below. All
Wivenhoe youngsters are invited to this Act of Remembrance which starts at
2.30pm.
The War Memorial Fund, launched in May by then Town Mayor Cllr Peter
Hill and Pastor Patrick Baxter, Chairman of the Royal British Legion has
raised around £4,000 to refurbish the base surrounding the War Memorial.

Grateful thanks are due
to everyone who contributed to this Fund and especially to those who came
to a Dinner hosted by the 7th Parachute Regiment in the Officers Mess that
raised £2,750 (click here
for report). The surplus once all costs are known will be donated to
Halsey House, a care home run by the Royal British Legion at Cromer.
| In the evening, everyone is invited to return to St Mary's Church a
special Music for Remembrance event - see details below. |
