Sunday 14th November 2004 - Wivenhoe's Annual Service of Remembrance

It was the turn of the Congregational Church to host the Annual Service of Remembrance organised by the Wivenhoe branch of the Royal British Legion. The Service was attended local Councillors, our MP, Bernard Jenkin and his wife. the police and a great many other people.

This year, a letter had gone out to Chairmen of Wivenhoe organisations from Mayor of Wivenhoe, Cllr Peter Hill, together with an invitation from the British Legion to attend the Service to make it clear it was for all residents to attend. In consequence the Church was full.

At the same time as the main Service was held in the Congregational Church, the Wivenhoe Scout & Guide Association held their annual Act of Young People's of Remembrance in the Wm Loveless Hall. Started eight years ago, this was an opportunity for Wivenhoe's young people to express their thoughts about war in words, poems and prayers.  See two examples after the photos.

After the two services, led by the Colchester Boys Brigade band, everyone walked to the War Memorial in St Mary's Churchyard for the traditional reading of names and laying of wreaths. People stood several deep in a large circle surrounding the stone cross.

After the wreath laying at the War Memorial, members of Cracknell Cubs laid crosses on the 12 war graves in Wivenhoe's old and new cemeteries.

  The hatred and bloodshed;
The noise and the guns;
The fear of death
and the fight to win;
The will to survive;
To fight for what's right.
It could be all over in a heart beat;
Life, death - a narrow margin.

Remembrance

I'm watching the stars in the sky.
Thinking how time can fly.
Wondering what tomorrow will bring.
In the distance I hear the children sing.
It slowly fades away.
I don't like today.
I don't like today
