About Cllr Maria
Iacovou
Cllr Maria Iacovou was elected to the the Town
Council in May 2007.
She was born in Hull, to a Cypriot father and an
English mother. After a rather itinerant childhood, she moved to London to
study maths at university, and remained there for the next 17 years,
during which time her earnings decreased progressively as she worked first
as an international tax analyst, then as a maths teacher, and then studied
for a PhD in economics.

In 1996 she bought a voluminous white dress and a
tiara and married Tobie Glenny, a primary school teacher. In 1997 she
started working at Essex University’s Institute for Social and Economic
Research, fully intending to remain living in London…… but she and
Tobie were so captivated by the charms of Wivenhoe that a year later they
moved here. They have two sons: George, born in 2000, and Robert, born in
2003.
Maria’s research interests include cross-national
comparative studies in living standards and family structures, and young
people’s lives and the transition to adulthood. She has also taught Yoga
for many years, and still teaches a weekly class in Wivenhoe; she has been
involved in several community initiatives over the years, and is currently
a parent governor at Millfields school.
She joined Wivenhoe Town Council as one of the first
two Green Party representatives on the Council. She is passionate about
the local community and sees maintaining local shops and services as a
priority.
In the little spare time which remains, Maria is
trying to knock her overgrown garden into shape, and may one day grow
vegetables there. |
