The Wivenhoe Civic Service 2005

The Town Council's Civic Service was held on Sunday, 16th October, 2005 in St Mary's Parish Church, followed by a reception for 250 guests in the William Loveless Hall.  At the reception, Town Mayor, Cllr Tom Roberts welcomed all the visiting dignitaries including Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex, MP Bernard Jenkin, Cllr Terry Sutton, Mayor of Colchester and many other visiting Mayors and Chairmen of Councils in the surrounding area. He also welcomed everyone else whom he described as the 'do-ers of Wivenhoe'.

The Service in St Mary's was conducted by the Rev David Thomas, assisted by Curate the Rev Brigid Hadfield. It was generally agreed the Choir excelled themselves under the leadership of Director of Music, Graham Wadley. Organist John Dowden too added to the splendour of the occasion, concluding the Service with two organ voluntaries.

The Civic Service is an opportunity to celebrate all that goes on in Wivenhoe during the year and to give thanks that we have so many people willing to contribute time and effort in making it a very special place in which to live.

Former Town Mayor, Gilli Primrose, organised an exhibition of work by local artists with a number of pieces sold during the reception and later in the afternoon. Profits were in aid of the Mayor's Charity Fund.
