2005 - Brian Sinclair co-opted on to Wivenhoe Town Council
I
have been married to Jan for 14 years and have two grown up daughters
and two stepsons. I am a grandfather as well. I came to
Wivenhoe in January 1979 from East Sussex to start a new job in
Colchester. Within three months I realised I had made a big mistake
but Wivenhoe seemed OK so we stayed.
During six months of
unemployment my family experienced many small acts of friendship from the
wonderfully mixed society of Wivenhoe which made us realise that it was a
place of few barriers. While my daughters attended Broomgrove School
I became a member of the PTA and was instrumental in instigating the
Friday Evening School Fete.
From that time I had various kinds of
technical and craft related employment until I finally became employed by
BT, where I was a Technical Officer until redundancy in 1993. I am
now aged 61 and retired and find that a busy retirement leaves less spare
time than full employment.
Shortly after joining Wivenhoe Sailing
Club in 1980, I ran the cadet section for some years, was a
committee member and progressed through the ranks until I became Commodore
in 1990. I chaired many meetings to negotiate the Club's move
downstream below the Barrier, a necessary step if dinghy racing was to
survive at the Club.
I
have taken part in the Wivenhoe Palace of Varieties music hall company and the
local folk music scene. I became one of the founder members and
skippers of the Wivenhoe Ferry Trust because I was asked in my
capacity as Commodore of WSC if the club could help with the required
nautical expertise. I am proud to be associated with the Ferry as it
has proved against many obstacles, that the apparently impossible can be
achieved with tenacity.
My
wife and I have been active supporters and sailors with the Jubilee
Sailing Trust, the organisation that provides tall ship sailing
opportunities for disabled and able-bodied crews. We were
involved in the planning which resulted in the return to her launching
place at Wivenhoe of the JST tall ship Lord Nelson in 1998.
Following
redundancy I continued with activities in the voluntary sector, including
four years as a volunteer ranger at High Woods Country Park.
Having
been involved in boating since childhood it was natural that I should
enjoy the wonderful unspoilt estuary of the River Colne.
I
hope to be able to contribute some of this experience in my time as a
Councillor for Wivenhoe Town Council.
