| 9th July 2003 - Report of the Annual Wivenhoe Town Council v Wivenhoe
Town Cricket Club Social Team Charity Cricket Match.
The annual Mayor's Charity Cricket Match against
Wivenhoe Cricket Club social team was held on Wednesday, 9th July 2003.
The weather was glorious, but when the teams arrived the
Club-house was locked. After a frantic phone call, the Club was opened.
As usual, the council team batted first and made a brisk
start with Peter Bather and Mike Barnard retiring having scored 25. With
only 9 in our team, and the Mayor (Gilli Primrose) saving herself for the
Race for Life on Sunday, everyone got to bat, including Sally Glozier
Green, our latest Councillor, and Christian Hill, representing the Deputy
Mayor, Peter Hill. The Council team finished on an amazing total of 134.
The bowling was opened by Ian Cartlett and Sally Glozier
Green. Sally got 2 wickets to put the social side under a bit of pressure.
But they have batting in depth, and Captain Steve Warner came in and
scored a brisk 25. Some very tight bowling from Adam Kent and Mike Barnard
kept the pressure on. However we were 2 fielders short (although the Club
lent us one) which meant I had to hide the Mayor and a gap!! At the start
of the final over, the Social Club were on 129, needing 6 to win. With one
bowl to go, they needed 1 run to tie, and 2 to win.
The final result was a tie! A fair result, and an end to
a most enjoyable match played in the best of spirits. Councillors and
friends provided the food, and a raffle raised £51. A vote of thanks was
given by the Mayor, Gilli Primrose, and replied to by Sue Halsey, the
Club's Chairman. Paul Connelly, the President of the Club, presented the
Mayor with the match fees of £50, towards the Mayor's Charity Fund.

Footnotes:
1. We were all very pleased to see 8 people from the University come and
enjoy a fine evening of cricket. We hope they enjoyed themselves and
we hope too they will come again. 2. Whilst on the
subject of the Cricket Club, the first eleven beat their big rivals
Halstead on Saturday to go top of Division One in the two counties
championship. Keep it up chaps.
