Wivenhoe Town Council:  Garden Waste Collection
August 2003

Brown sacks for garden waste have been withdrawn by Colchester Borough Council this August 2003 and will no longer be collected.

They were never intended to be permanent, particularly because they were not an environment-friendly method: the sacks were collected by the ordinary dustcart and went straight to landfill.

Colchester Borough Council is committed to increasing the percentage of waste materials going to recycling and, as part of that policy, garden waste is now collected on the fortnightly recycling day, in Wivenhoe's case every other Wednesday.

Just put your garden waste out on the boundary of your property in any open re-useable container.  An old dustbin would do, or you may find one of the collapsible tubs available from DIY stores ideal for this purpose: they drop down flat and take up almost no space at all when not in use.

You can, of course, still take garden waste to a tip, but, especially as both tips nearest to Wivenhoe are 7 miles away, using the CBC collection service does less damage to the environment than the many car journeys it would take to remove a  lorry-load!

Remember: the most environmentally friendly way of disposing of your garden waste is to compost it yourself and what's more, you can include kitchen waste, such as vegetable peelings, which the Council is not allowed to collect because of regulations.
