October, 2002 - Traffic Speeds in The Avenue and Rectory Road

In May 2002, Wivenhoe Town Council requested the police to carry out speed checks in The Avenue and Rectory Road in response to concerns from local residents about the speed of traffic on these important roads.

The Police took action following our request and have provided us with the following information:

The Avenue

Data was collected from Tuesday 16 July to Thursday 18 July inclusive. During this period a total of 17,752 vehicles were recorded with an average of 5,917 per day.  The 85th percentile (the speed at which 85% of the vehicles were travelling within)  was 33.54mph.

Rectory Road

Data was collected from Monday 15 July to Wednesday 17 July 2002 inclusive. during this period a total of 11,176 vehicles were recorded with an average of 3,725 per day. the 85th percentile was 34.09mph

They said that both sets of data showed a high level of compliance with the speed limit, like most roads in the County, although there was some evidence of higher speeds.

This data has been given to the Colchester Police who will take appropriate action from time to time.

We have also met with our Community Police Officer, PC Tracey Greenwood, who has informed us that she has issued some speeding tickets herself.
