poetrywivenhoe - November 2007

poetrywivenhoe continues its autumn season with readings by two well known local poets, Robert Cole and David Charleston.  This poetry evening is to be on Friday 9th November at 8.00pm at the Royal British Legion Hall on the quay, Wivenhoe.

Robert Cole has devoted himself to writing and studying poetry since he was a young man of 15 when he won a Borough poetry competition in Enfield , and he has been published widely here and in the US , mainly in magazines but also in some anthologies.  Some of his poems have been translated into French and published in France.  He now divides his time between Colchester and Paris.  Robert, together with Susie Reynolds, founded and edits Chimera, now a nationally recognised and Colchester-based magazine of poetry and prose.  Chimera Six was published this summer.  Robert's poetry has been described as "strange, imaginative and sinewy".

A border poet, David Charleston lives in Suffolk and works in Colchester. His poems have appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines, and in 1999 his collection Nothing Better to Do was published by Jardine Press.  In 2003 he received an Arts Council writers' award.

He last read at Wivenhoe in 1999 but says he's written a few more poems since then.  The poet Robert Etty is quoted as saying "David Charleston's poetry is distinguished by an elegance and poise not always found in writing as spare as his".

Both Cole and Charleston have been featured poets in the local journal Wivenhoe News. Now there is an opportunity for their distinctive voices to be heard at this next poetrywivenhoe event.
