July 2007 - DEAN PARKIN
on stage with “poetrywivenhoe”
| After
a flying start in March, with Matt Harvey, “poetrywivenhoe” has
continued to stage live poetry events every month throughout the
spring. Each event has been well attended, and together with Martin
Newell’s spoke’n’word, and the reading events that occurred
during this year's Wivenhoe May Festival, it’s given a distinctly
literary feel to the place this year.
As
a finale to this season, the group is welcoming Dean
Parkin on Thurday July 19th at 8.00pm at The
Greyhound.

Dean is perhaps better known in Norfolk where he
regularly appears on BBC Radio Norfolk.
But he’s also appeared in festivals such as the Cambridge
“Wordfest” and the St. Andrews “Stanza” event. Not content with
readings, Dean’s day job is with the Poetry Trust, where for several
years he has helped organize the annual Aldeburgh Poetry Festival.
His
work is well known for its straightforward warmth. Jackie Wills of PN
Review remarks, “Dean’s poems convey a natural empathy for people of
all kinds and a curiosity about human behaviour... I like his humanity and
his understatement. It’s refreshing.” He has been described as a very
versatile and readable poet.
Unsurprisingly this talent has not
gone unrewarded. In recent years he has been selected as the Jerwood Young
Poet of the Year, and he is much in demand both with the Arvon Foundation
and educational establishments.

In
Line
Waiting what seems
like forever
for chips to fry, he sees himself
all the way down the line.
Just a boy
with a fist of coins,
eye level to the counter.
Jack the lad,
ordering for two, hungry
for the evening ahead.
The family man with complications,
two large portions, three small, two with fish
but one without, always without something.
Then, retired,
knowing what to expect,
wrapped up in yesterday’s news.
What happens next? Somebody pays
and we all move one step forward, catching
the draught from the door as they go.
