October 2007 - Autumn Verse in
Wivenhoe
|
“poetrywivenhoe”
is delighted to present two established poets at its next event
at The British Legion, The Quay, Wivenhoe on Friday
October 19th at
8.00pm
.
Matthew Sweeney has
published over a dozen works since his first collection, “ A dream
of Maps “ appeared in 1981. His latest, “Black Moon” appeared
earlier this year. Some see him as representing a “second
generation” of the flowering of Irish Poetry, alongside Paul
Muldoon and Ian Duhig. His work has been described as strange and
compelling. He is undoubtedly a highly distinguished poet with a
rich body of work. He has won a number of awards for his work
including the Arts Council Writers Award in 1999.

Sally Festing
recently moved from Leicestershire to Manningtree. She is not only a
poet but also a biographer, playwright, reviewer, journalist, art,
social and garden historian. She has had over a hundred poems
published in a variety of magazines. Eleven poems formed the
centerpiece of a play recently broadcast on radio 4. The poet U.A
Fanthorpe has described her work as magical and visionary.
“poetrywivenhoe”
is a
community group that started earlier in the year. They have been
holding open events in the town every month, with the aim of
bringing the best in live poetry readings to the area. Each event
always includes an open- mic, and new voices are always
welcome.
