July 2007 - Open Gardens

Open Gardens this year was held on 16th / 17th June and organised this time jointly by St. Mary's Church and the Wivenhoe Society. The weather was mixed on the Sunday but on the Saturday those who ventured round had to contend with occasional squalls and thunder and lightening, with sunny intervals between.

£2,000 was raised over the weekend with half going to St Mary's Church, and the Wivenhoe Society sharing their half between the Ferry Trust and the Queen's Jubilee Youth Trust for Wivenhoe.

Below are some of the 26 gardens which were open over the weekend.

Gardens of all shapes and sizes were open and gave great delight. Maureen Lee's garden had been professionally designed by Nicola Morse the year previously and was already looking very well established (pictures below - plum coloured walls, and Nicola standing ready to answer lots of questions).

People cam from all over Essex. Indeed many visitors were from different parts of the world, although we suspect they hadn't come here specifically for Wivenhoe's Open Gardens!

One family from Basildon enjoyed their picnic in the Folly at Toad Hall (bottom left), whilst President of the Wivenhoe Society, Dave Harrison, took the opportunity to promote his walk up Mount Kilimanjaro in October in aid of the charity Whizz-Kidz whilst standing in the new bamboo garden at Toad Hall.
