| June 2008 - THE
NOTTAGE MARITIME INSTITUTE - SUMMER
EXHIBITION 2008
The Nottage Maritime Institute on Wivenhoe Quay was
founded in 1896, following the death of Captain Nottage, a Victorian
yachtsman who recognised the value of nautical skills in the
Essex
sailors he employed on his yachts, and who wished to provide a means for
their improvement. The Nottage was set up with his bequest and has run
courses in navigation and seamanship ever since.
It now offers a variety of RYA recognised courses, as
well as running an important museum of local and maritime artefacts. Every
summer the Nottage Institute also hosts an exhibition, the theme of which
varies from maritime history to local art. This year’s exhibition
marries the themes of two of Wivenhoe’s best-known artists to the
nautical environment of its museum.
The exhibition is: “Two
Wivenhoe Artists”, and will feature the work of James Dodds and
Annie Bielecka, two local and internationally-exhibited artists.
