| Sunday 9th November, 2003 - Remembrance reflections in
Wivenhoe.
Whilst the Royal British Legion's Service was taking place in St Mary's
Church, the Wivenhoe Scout and Guide Association were holding their Young
People's Act of Remembrance in the Wm Loveless Hall. At 3.30pm both groups
joined together around the War Memorial for the reading of the names of
the fallen, read out by by Pastor Patrick Baxter, the Exhortation, given
by Les Punshon, President of the Wivenhoe Branch of the British Legion,
and the Last Post, given by a bugler from the band of the 1st Colchester
Boys Brigade.
Earlier in the day, Scout Leader Darrin Keeble had taken a party of
scouts to Wivenhoe's two cemeteries to place crosses on the seven war
graves there. Later, in the Young People's Act of Remembrance, he told the
youngsters about Sergeant Horace William Pitt, who became known as The
Bandmaster and who died in France on 31st March, 1918. His name, together
with two of his brothers, is inc=scribed on the War Memorial.
In the evening, the Director of Music at St Mary's led the choir and
others in an evening of Mozart, with the main piece being one of the
settings of the Vespers – Vesperae solennes de Confessore K339.
This was written around 1780 when Mozart was serving as court organist to
the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. Other smaller pieces by Mozart
were included in the programme, including a very attractive Kyrie from the
Missa Brevis in B and the anthem 'Unto Thee O Lord do I lift up my
soul’.
