November 2003 - Operation ShoeboxFilled shoeboxes

On Saturday 29th November, a steady stream of people made their way to the Scout & Guide Hall to deliver their shoebox filled with items for disadvantaged children in overseas countries. 77 shoeboxes were delivered to the Hall from members of the Scout and Guide units with many boxes also coming from people like Pat Moss of the Congregational Church and several members of the Wivenhoe Methodist Church.

Sue Lillywhite, leader of 1st Wivenhoe Beavers, who has co-ordinated Operation Shoebox by putting out posters and leaflets, and collecting the filled boxes, said she was very pleased with the good response, especially as the number of boxes exceed last year's figure of 70.

The boxes will be collected on Tuesday by the charity Samaritan's Purse and sent to Eastern Europe to be given to children this Christmas.

The boxes were filled with small gifts, toys, sweets and useful items like a woolly hat, toothbrush and soap.
