Remembrance Day, Sunday 10th November, 2002
The weather was kind after all to the
Remembrance events in Wivenhoe on Sunday 10th November 2002, after rain
had been forecast all day.
A party from 1st Wivenhoe Scouts, led by Leader Darrin Keeble, went to
the two cemeteries to revive a tradition of placing crosses on the graves
of those who died in the war.
About two hundred people gathered in the William Loveless Hall for the
Young People's Act of Remembrance. Prayers, thoughts about war, and
hopes for the future were read out by the youngsters as well as listening
to a talk by Bonnie, research by Darrin Keeble into the military career of
John Barlow who died in WW1 as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps and local
MP, Bernard Jenkin, Shadow Minister of Defence who was the special guest
at the service.
At the same time, the traditional Service of Remembrance was being
conducted in the Congregational Church by Pastor Patrick Baxter and Rev
David Thomas with the Mayor, Cllr David Craze and members of the Royal
British Legion and others.
Afterwards, led by the Colne Sea Cadets Band, some three hundred people
trooped down to the War Memorial for the traditional reading of the names
of the fallen, the minute's silence and the laying of wreathes.

A
thought written by Isabel, a 5th Wivenhoe Brownie: Peace is a
magician that holds a magic wand.
It sprinkles glittering dust that carries peace across the land.
Why doesn't it work?
