Remembrance Day, Sunday 10th November, 2002

The weather was kind after all to the Remembrance events in Wivenhoe on Sunday 10th November 2002, after rain had been forecast all day.1st Wivenhoe Scouts placing crosses on war graves in the Wivenhoe Cemetery

A party from 1st Wivenhoe Scouts, led by Leader Darrin Keeble, went to the two cemeteries to revive a tradition of placing crosses on the graves of those who died in the war.

Young People's Act of Remembrance in the Wm Loveless Hall November 2002About two hundred people gathered in the William Loveless Hall for the Young People's Act of Remembrance.  Prayers, thoughts about war, and hopes for the future were read out by the youngsters as well as listening to a talk by Bonnie, research by Darrin Keeble into the military career of John  Barlow who died in WW1 as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps and local MP, Bernard Jenkin, Shadow Minister of Defence who was the special guest at the service.Benard Jenkin MP at the Young People's Act of Remembrance 2002.

At the same time, the traditional Service of Remembrance was being conducted in the Congregational Church by Pastor Patrick Baxter and Rev David Thomas with the Mayor, Cllr David Craze and members of the Royal British Legion and others.

Afterwards, led by the Colne Sea Cadets Band, some three hundred people trooped down to the War Memorial for the traditional reading of the names of the fallen, the minute's silence and the laying of wreathes.
