Press
Release
22nd April 2002

A new name and strapline were introduced on Monday, 22nd April, 2002 by the former Guide Association. Lisa Scott-Lee, formerly of Steps, revealed the new name for the UK's 600,000 plus members, 'Girlguiding UK', and the first ever strapline 'Surprise Yourself'

On Saturday 20th April, 600 Brownies celebrated the launch of the new identity during a giant 'sleepover' at the Science Museum in London.

Lisa, herself once a Brownie, said,

"Girlguiding UK is a great way for young girls and women to have fun. I’m delighted to be helping out with the launch of the new identity, showcasing the fantastic activities that girls can now take part in as members of Girlguiding UK."

Jenny Leach, Chief Guide, said,
"As with everything we do, our new name puts the girls first. It also gives recognition to the many thousands of volunteers who dedicate their time to running the 34,000 local groups. The 'Surprise Yourself' element emphasises that both young and adult members of Girlguiding UK continually surprise themselves by what they do, and when non-members really see what we offer, they too are surprised."
Denise King, Chief Executive, added,
"The new identity is part of an ongoing programme to ensure Guiding remains relevant and appealing to girls while maintaining our core values. From embarking upon team expeditions, making friends for life and running great initiatives like 'Take Our Daughters To Work', Girlguiding UK offers girls the opportunity to learn dynamic and valuable skills that will prove useful throughout their lives."
One of the first campaigns that Girlguiding UK will be launching is 'Take Our Daughters To Work'. Girlguiding UK is, for the first time, the main organiser behind this event, which will take place on Thursday 25th April. 'Take Our Daughters To Work' Day involves encouraging people across the UK to take girls and young women into the workplace to show them the different types of opportunities and careers open to them.

Notes:
  • Girlguiding UK is the UK's largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women
  • 50% of all women in the UK have belonged to the Guiding movement; almost 30% of all eight year old girls are Brownies
  • Girlguiding UK is part of the largest women’s organisation in the world, with 10 million members in 140 countries
  • Girlguiding UK was formerly known as The Guide Association.
