| IOLANTHE
Congratulations to every one in Wivenhoe's thriving Gilbert
& Sullivan's Society for creating a thoroughly entertaining
production of Iolanthe.
Under Mary Williamson's careful and expert Directorship, the
Society successfully brought Gilbert & Sullivan's 1882 operetta
into a modern setting. It was topical then and topical now. Seems
things never change! And some things never should, like the Wivenhoe
Gilbert & Sullivan Society's ability to achieve such a high
standard in performance, singing and overall production.
Jo Hunter's 200 hours spent painting the backdrop of the Palace
of Westminster brought a round of applause from the audience when
the interior House of Lords was revealed.
This was the twenty-sixth show by the Wivenhoe G&S, and the
third time of performing Iolanthe. Whilst there were many familiar
faces in the cast of 43 people, the principal line-up of Martin
Sparks, Phil Stephens, Jonathan Else, Peter Bather, Fiona Morris,
Tim Glover, Gwenllian South, and Natasha Shipp only included one
person from the Society's last production of Iolanthe in 1993.
Those on the stage were supported by a great team of people who
must have worked very hard on all aspects of this production. They
should be proud of their achievement.
And where would Wivenhoe G&S be without its Director of Music
Hilary Brunning, John Wolton who plays the piano flawlessly every
night and of course Chairman of the Society, Peter Cook.
Well done all of you and thank you for entertaining us so
well.

| In 2007:
Three years ago, the Society broke with tradition and
performed Fiddler on the Roof to much acclaim from the
audience, and pleasure from those who took part.
Whilst the Society intends to keep performing Gilbert and
Sullivan operettas, it will occasionally break from
tradition.
So next year, it will be My Fair Lady. It will be slightly
earlier in the year: Tuesday 27th February to Saturday 3rd
March. |
