Wivenhoe WEA - Spring Course 2009

Wivenhoe WEA will be starting the New Year with a new course.  The Spring course for 2009 will be The Plant Hunters and the tutor will be Peter White.

Over 10 weeks we will look at the history behind all those plants in our houses, gardens, greenhouses and parks which have come from every corner of the world and we which now think of as part of the essential English garden.

We will find out about the people who scoured the Americas from Hudson ’s Bay to the Pampas, from the Appalachians to the Palisades; who explored the Pacific and the Himalayas; who opened our eyes to the plants of Africa and Asia.

We will hear more about the names behind some of our favourite plants; the Tradescants, Banks, Veitch, Wilson, Thunberg, Siebold and countless others.

What’s more the story isn’t all about people before our time – I can remember Frank Kingdon Ward talking on the radio in ‘Children’s Hour’ about his plant hunting adventures in China and the Far East and process of discovery is still going on.

The course will be held at Wivenhoe Methodist Church at 7.30 pm on Monday evenings, beginning on 12th January 2009. The fee will be £45.

For more information please contact Janice Allen, 1 Valfreda Way, Wivenhoe, tel: 01206 824470.
