May 2008 - An Update from St Mary's Singers

ST MARY’S SINGERS – SUMMER CANTICLES

ST MARY’S CHURCH, SUNDAY 6TH JULY AT 7.30PM

A summer feast of choral music including Festival Te Deum – John Rutter, Blest pair of sirens – Parry and other music by Haydn, William Boyce and Telemann.  Organist John Rippin, conducted by Graham Wadley.  Rehearsals start on Thursday 15th May in St Marys at 7.30pm.  Any new members would be welcomed - particularly tenors and basses. See Graham's invitation below.

ST MARY’S SINGERS – FUTURE PLANS

St Mary's Singers is a four part SATB adult choir attached to St Mary's Church and directed by Graham Wadley which meets for three 8 week terms annually to prepare and perform major choral works.  Over the last two years we have tackled Mozart's Requiem, Vivaldi Gloria, Dvorak Mass in D and a Mozart Missa Brevis.  We are always seeking new members and, like most choral groups, particularly need tenors and basses.

We are now working on our next event which will be performed on Sunday 6th July.  The main items are Festival Te Deum - John Rutter, Blest Pair of Sirens - Parry and Insanae et vanae curae – Haydn.  In addition there will be some smaller pieces including For the Beauty of the Earth – John Rutter, Hallelujah – William Boyce and Hosanna to the Son of David – Telemann.  Hopefully all very enjoyable and singable pieces.

In the autumn our main work for Remembrance Sunday evening will be the Mass in B flat by Johann Hummell, with rehearsals starting on Thursday 18th September.

Future dates:

ST MARY'S SINGERS – SUMMER CANTICLES – Sunday 6th July at 7.30pm

ST MARY'S SINGERS – MUSIC FOR REMEMBRANCE  Sunday 9th November at 7.30pm  – Mass in B flat by Hummel

ST MARY'S CAROL SERVICE - Sunday 14th December at 6.00pm

CAROLS ON THE QUAY - Sunday 21st December at 6.00pm

An Invitation from Graham Wadley, Director of Music, St Mary's Singers.

I would like to extend a very warm invitation to you to join with St Mary’s Singers for our next event in July – Summer Canticles.

I normally circulate details far and wide about these events and on this occasion I wondered if there are any tenors or basses out there who might be interested to come along.  We have some of our regulars missing due to holidays or work commitments and those two departments could do with any extra support which might be possible!!

We will be singing:

Festival Te Deum - John Rutter,

Blest Pair of Sirens - Parry (in an SATB arrangement not the double choir original version)

Insanae et vanae curae – Haydn.

For the Beauty of the Earth – John Rutter,

Hallelujah – William Boyce

Hosanna to the Son of David – Telemann.

Hopefully all very enjoyable and singable pieces

All of the music is available on loan in advance; hopefully all the library copies will be with me in a day or two.

We start rehearsals in St Mary's at 7.30pm on Thursday 15th May and then every Thursday until the performance on Sunday 6 July at 7.30pm.  We will have a rehearsal at 4.30 immediately prior to the performance.

I do appreciate that it may not be possible to commit to the full rehearsal schedule and I would appreciate the participation of singers who are prepared to learn the notes in their own time and attend for an occasional rehearsal, or those as we near the event.

If you would like to take part you would be most warmly welcomed, particularly if you sing bass or tenor.  If possible do let me know in advance or just turn up on 15th May.

Graham Wadley
