December 2007 - REPAIR
TO THE ORGAN
AT ST MARY
’S
After just over 125 years of use, the original
leather on the bellows on the
Walker
organ at St Mary’s finally has to be renewed.
This is a large concertina type reservoir which is used to hold air
at the correct pressure before it is fed to the individual pipes of the
organ to make them sound.
Over the years, the leather has been patched, with
patch upon patch, to the point where it can no longer be repaired and the
whole assembly has to be releathered.
For some months we have been quite vulnerable to a catastrophic
failure as a split has been developing which has been difficult to reach
and repair. Vic Hackworthy, an
organ building craftsman who lives in Wivenhoe, has kindly been watching
and repairing this where possible to see us through. |

Update on the Organ -
May 2008
At long last we have
been able to make firm arrangements for the bellows on the
organ to be re-leathered by The Village Workshop from
Thaxted.
Work will commence
with the removal of the bellows on 27th May for return to
the workshop. The organ is likely to be out of action
for the following two Sundays, but back ready for the summer
weddings and Summer Canticles.
