29 December 2007 - REPAIR TO THE ORGAN AT ST MARY ’S

After just over 125 years of use, the original leather on the bellows on the Walker organ at St Mary’s finally has to be renewed.  This is a large concertina type reservoir which is used to hold air at the correct pressure before it is fed to the individual pipes of the organ to make them sound.

Over the years, the leather has been patched, with patch upon patch, to the point where it can no longer be repaired and the whole assembly has to be releathered.  For some months we have been quite vulnerable to a catastrophic failure as a split has been developing which has been difficult to reach and repair.  Vic Hackworthy, an organ building craftsman who lives in Wivenhoe, has kindly been watching and repairing this where possible to see us through.

Update on the Organ - May 2008

At long last we have been able to make firm arrangements for the bellows on the organ to be re-leathered by The Village Workshop from Thaxted.

Work will commence with the removal of the bellows on 27th May for return to the workshop.  The organ is likely to be out of action for the following two Sundays, but back ready for the summer weddings and Summer Canticles.

It is now necessary to go ahead with the repair, costing about £4,000 which will involve very specialized traditional skills to replace the original leather, with identical new materials.  The complete bellows will have to be removed from the bowels of the organ to the workshops of ‘The Village Workshop’ at Thaxted, where their traditional organ building craftsmen will carry out the leather work.  This whole process will take about two weeks and it is hoped that the work will be completed by Easter 2008.

The State of the Organ Bellows

Right:  This is just a general shot showing some of the several hundred pipes in the organ.  The ones in the centre are the smallest in the organ - and make the highest pitched sounds.

Below right: Shows the bellows at the bottom of the photograph - the leather parts are in white.  This whole assembly has to be removed from underneath the frame and all the mechanisms which link the keyboards to the pipes.  It is about 8 feet long and will take several men to slowly slide it out of the organ when it is removed for repair.

Below: This picture shows the corners of the bellows with the many patches which have been added over the years.
