| Wivenhoe's December Market and Late Night Shopping
Evening - Thursday, 2nd December, 2004
It was a wonderfully crisp evening. Just the sort of weather to
encourage everyone to turn out for what is now a major occasion in the
Wivenhoe calendar. And lower Wivenhoe was crammed full of people to see the
Christmas lights switched on, this year by our local MP, Bernard Jenkin, and to enjoy
the special atmosphere of the evening. Thousands of people came down
during the evening, including many from outside of Wivenhoe.
The Churchyard and inside the Church were packed with stalls, with many
organisations raising money for their individual causes. The shops were open, with many serving mulled
wine and mince pies. There were parties in many of them and 5 art
galleries were open too.
Susie and Aaron from local radio station, SGR, with their Black Thunder vehicle were there helping to
promote the event and from which a live broadcast was made at 6.30pm. Singers 'In Accord' were in the square, encouraging
people to spread out. The Police took the opportunity to meet more local
people by bringing their Mobile Police Unit to the occasion. The
Salvation Army band played in the church and accompanied Lucy Wadley and
Bernard Jenkin with their Good King Wenceslas duet.
A great evening. Well done everyone who contributed to the success of
it and for making it the special occasion it undoubtedly was.
