December 2003 - Christmas Carols
CAROLS ON THE QUAY
Despite heavy
drizzle a large crowd gathered on the quay on Tuesday 23rd
December for the popular and now annual ‘Carols on the Quay’ organised
by Churches Together in Wivenhoe and led by Rev. David Thomas.
The popular
carols were accompanied by the band, wisely sheltering in the Nottage
Institute: Lucy Wadley
(flute), Joe Rampling (trombone), Pam Garland (euphonium), Francis Garland
(viola), Max Guy (piano accordion) and Graham Wadley (keyboard).
The event raised
£285, which was shared equally between Christian Aid and Beacon House,
Colchester. Thanks to the
Nottage Institute and to Martin Daly at the Rose and Crown for providing
mince pies after the singing
CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE 2003
St Mary’s was
just about full for the annual Christmas Carol Service on Sunday 21st
December with its blend of familiar congregational carols, readings and
choral items by St Mary’s Church Choir and members of St Mary’s
Singers.
The choral items
included a new setting of Adam lay ybounden by Malcolm Archer and a French
carol arranged by Andrew Carter ‘A maiden most gentle’. Berlioz contributed ‘The Shepherds Farewell’ and the
choir excelled in the hauntingly beautiful ‘ Here is the little door’
by Herbert Howells. Lollipops
by the choir also included the favourite ‘Shepherd’s Pipe Carol’ by
John Rutter and the first movement from Vivaldi’s Gloria.
John Dowden
accompanied the choir which was again directed by Graham Wadley.
