The Wivenhoe Encyclopedia

Wednesday, 30th July, 2003 - The Tug of War across the river between the Whalebone pub of Fingringhoe & The Rose & Crown (& others) pub of Wivenhoe took place as the sun broke out on Wednesday evening.

Large crowds on both banks cheered on the teams of eight, who were well matched. Such was the excitement & the enthusiasm of the crowds that the first pull took charge before the marks were set up and, after much debate, was declared void.  Each team then won a strenuous and hard-won pull each.

Exhausted and muddied, both teams retired to the pub. The Whalebone team drove round and joined in the celebrations at the BBQ & Music evening at the Black Buoy, where the new "Wivenhoe Tug of War" Trophy was presented, to be shared for 6 months each by the teams.

The Wivenhoe spectators, who turned out in great numbers and enjoyed the whole spectacle, contributed over £200 in a bucket collection during the evening in aid of the Wivenhoe Town Regatta's chosen charity which this year is St Helena Hospice .
