2009 Wivenhoe May Fair raises over £4,000 for charity
Wivenhoe, 24 June 2009: Following a sunny afternoon of fantastic music and
entertainment attended by nearly 5,000 people, the Wivenhoe May Fair
committee has announced that it raised in excess of £4,000 for charity this
year. This brings the total donated over the past five years to over
£12,000.
The free music, comedy and spoken word festival, held on the afternoon of
the last Bank Holiday Monday supported Amnesty, Russ Foundation, Macmillan,
Big Issue, Muscular Distrophy, Essex Wildlife Trust, Activ8, Monday Club and
Autism Anglia. Most of the money was raised by the colourful ‘May Fairies’
who roamed the site with collecting buckets.
The 27 year old community-based festival is run entirely by volunteers. This
year the main stage featured acts including Jazmine Ava, New Town Kings and
Karilla.
In addition, the ever popular acoustic stage hosted those who didn’t need to
plug in produce great music including Tony Gibson, Sally Scoobs and Friends,
Ady Johnson, Maria Eracleous and Murphy's Lore.
The
spoken word stage, hosted by Wivenhoe Funny Farm and Poetry Wivenhoe, also
showcased the leading lights in comedy, poetry and story telling with over
30 acts taking to the stage during the six hour festival.
Jon Chamberlain of the Wivenhoe May Fair said: “The sun gods were smiling on
us this year resulting in a fantastic day of fun and fund raising. We are
delighted to have donated over £4,000 to our chosen charities this year and
thank all those who came along to support the festival. See you all in
