Tim Whitnell

Guitarist, composer, teacher

Tim Whitnell is well known locally as a fine acoustic guitar player, composer and teacher. He is also gaining worldwide recognition for his compositions and playing. Through his publisher in Munchen his music is being licensed for use all over the world for film, TV and other media.

Moving to Wivenhoe two decades ago, initially to Queens Road and more recently Keelars Lane, he splits his time between composing and recording, and teaching aspiring guitarists.

Note: He has  couple of teaching slots available now! Get in touch.

Tim has played guitar and composed for more than quarter of a century. During this time he has busked in Europe and worked in music therapy with mentally handicapped adults. He has played on television and radio and collaborated with other musicians. He has two very well received CDs of his music ‘Rex’s Day’ and ‘In a Mind To’ available.

He plays ‘finger style’ guitar, which he describes as more akin to approaching the instrument as a piano. The bass, rhythm, harmony and melody are played as a syncopated whole. Tim uses a mix of styles and techniques to create his music which is an instrumental journey through country, rock, blues and ambient moods.

Tim has been teaching guitar to all abilities and ages for about 12 years. He uses the tabalature method to score music, which he says is more suited to finger style playing than standard notation.

He is currently focusing on producing an ambient album for release early next year, with local producer Mike Trim. Tim is also enjoying playing with local fiddle player Crispin under the name ‘Whirled Music’.

Tim is a regular at the Park Hotel’s Unplugged Nights, where you can hear him play, among many other talented musicians.
