Town
and Gown Dinner 2006
17th November saw the second town and gown dinner between
the University of Essex and the town of Wivenhoe.
The event was hosted by the University of Essex Vice Chancellor,
Professor Sir Ivor Crewe and the after-dinner speaker was Professor Jules
Pretty from the Department of Biological Sciences.
The town and gown dinner was the brain child of Cllr Tom Roberts, then
Mayor of Wivenhoe (2005-2006) and his Mayoress Dilly Meyer who are both
graduates of the University of Essex.
Following the presentation of the Wivenhoe Oral History Project in
the Mayor’s Parlour at Colchester Town Hall the pair approached the Vice
Chancellor about running this potential fundraising event as part of the
Mayor’s Charity for that year. On
18th November 2005 the first town and gown formal dinner was
held and provided two bursaries for students at the University of Essex
who were residents of Wivenhoe and had obtained excellent grades in their
studies. The after-dinner
speaker for the evening was Vince Rayner, Wivenhoe’s famous comedian who
entertained the diners with his repertoire of tales and songs.
This dinner should become an annual event and help to provide better
links between Wivenhoe and the University which is on its doorstep.
The date for 2007 has been fixed on 16th November and if you
would like to join us (tickets are limited and will go on sale in
June/July) please contact Tom Roberts by e-mail:
or ring 826226 quoting ref: T&G Dinner Nov 07 and we’ll ensure you
get an invitation.
