About Public Footpaths at Cook's Shipyard

16Mar06 - ECC Footpath Closure Notice - click here

20Dec05 - FP18 re-opened by Taylor Woodrow after demolition work was completed.

14Dec05 - Wivenhoe Town Council has today been advised by Colchester Borough Council Planning Department that they are aware a footpath has been closed on a temporary basis whilst Taylor Woodrow carry out demolition/remediation work. They tell us this is unauthorised and that they will be contacting Taylor Woodrow on this matter.

Picture, right, of Public Footpath 18 which was temporarily closed by Taylor Woodrow for Health and Safety reasons whilst demolition work is carried out, was re-opened on Tuesday 20th December.

13Dec05 - A statement from Mr James Moodie of Taylor Woodrow.

"Concerning public footpaths at Cook's Shipyard, I can categorically state that all public rights of access across the Cook's site and including the river frontage, around the Wet Dock and on the

The current access to FP18 which goes past the Wet Dock and comes out on Walter Radcliff Way has been closed for Health and Safety reasons whilst Demolition works are carried out. It is our intention to re-instate this access as soon as is reasonably practicable. However we do have a duty of care whilst construction work is carried out for the Health and Safety of pedestrians and therefore we will need to review carefully access across the site at all points and this will be part of the agreed traffic management plan. We will not prevent access

I would re-iterate again that we will not prevent the access by pedestrians across the site, however this will be a building site and we will need to work closely with the local population to ensure their safety and rights of passage across the site.

I trust this will go some way to allaying the fears of some of the local population with regard to current and future pedestrian rights across Cooks Shipyard."

James Moodie, Taylor Woodrow, 13 December, 2005

Note:  There may be some confusion about footpaths at Cook's. I believe the footpath of principal concern to people is FP18 which is not the subject of the closure notice. FP18 is the important one which everyone uses to walk from The Folly towards the Sailing Club. The footpaths which will cease are FP 11, 12 and 13 which will be replaced by public rights of way as indicated in the Public Access map. For this map click here. A condition of the Feb 2002 planning application allowing development at Cook's made it a condition that the Scheme 'should incorporate a public, pedestrian promenade no less wide or extensive than that indicated on the approved indicative plan'. This promenade can be seen in the Master Plan and the fact it will be provided by Taylor Woodrow is confirmed by James Moodie in the first paragraph of his statement above.  Cllr Peter Hill
