Advice from Ken Rogers, Chairman of the Community Safety Neighbourhood
Watch Group:
Half of car crime takes place outside houses of the owners. Many expensive cars are left on driveways - to assist the criminal keys are left in the ignition or
are easily available in the home.
Car crime is an increasing global problem - if going on holiday without the car, leave the keys in a secure place, out of view. Many expensive cars are stolen to order and shipped abroad. Satellite systems are available that can track your vehicle often assisting in recovery of stolen vehicles.
Not only keep an eye on your neighbour's house, but also his car.
Warning - Colchester has experienced a number of car thefts. Don't let it happen to you -- remember continue to keep Wivenhoe safe by staying alert.

OBJECTIVES
-
Providing a safer community by reducing crime,
antisocial behaviour and the fear of crime. Thereby improving the quality
of life for the law abiding Wivenhoe community.
-
Conducting and publishing an audit of local crime and
disorder problems. (Disorder includes rowdy and threatening behaviour in
public places. It also includes ‘quality of life issues’ such as
‘littering’)
-
Included in the audits, is the prevention of
‘repeat victimization’ Repeat victimization ruins people’s lives. It
is therefore part of the aims to provide advice and support.
These aims are to improve the quality of life for victims and by
reducing the fear of crime and crime itself.
-
Determining the priorities for action.
-
Devising a strategy that tackles these priority
problems, with clear objectives and targets for action.
-
Monitoring progress and fine-tuning the strategy.
-
Working together to protect each other from crime and
antisocial behaviour.
-
Acting on anything happening within the community
that could cause worry or concern.
-
Taking action to improve the environment by getting
things done about matters such as vandalism, graffiti, poor lighting and
lack of social amenities.
-
Developing good citizenship through voluntary action
and support.
-
To increase citizen's perception of personal
safety.
-
Promoting interaction among citizens by talking to
neighbours about crime prevention.
-
Using the Wivenhoe community as a force in social
control in bringing about safer communities.
-
Addressing community concerns by having face-to-face
meetings with more than just community leaders. This enables the Group to set
priorities to pursue first to help people to gain a sense of personal
control, and then challenging the community into accepting its share of
responsibilities for reducing crime and disorder. These challenges in
working together as a group in efforts go far beyond Neighbourhood Watch.
-
Building strong communities means reducing the number
of places where crime can find a foothold and flourish.
-
Solving the problem of juvenile deviance is important
because juveniles commit the majority of the crimes and require that the
system help those who stray to find their way back into the mainstream
culture.

PREVENTING
CRIME
Sport engages both young people and adults in
positive activities and increases and strengthens community involvement
and relations. Ultimately, without any doubt, significantly contributes in
the reduction of crime and fear of crime. A great deal of work has already
been done in this area, however there are other sporting activities under
consideration to interest those who are not engaged in the present
available sporting facilities.
Preventing children being victimised by other
children, being drawn into crime by peer pressure and as a response to
fear of intimidation and the threat of violence. (This in turn has
enormous implications in the reporting of crime by children, however
headway has been made in treating in confidence these concerns resulting
in meetings with parents and the children concerned resulting in
successful conclusions)
A great deal has already been done in respect of
bullying by children to children including bullying at schools. (This has
resulted in the publication of a paper on these serious issues. This paper
also includes research into other areas) The Wivenhoe Community Safety
N.W. Group will be building closer relationships with schools and other
agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour, bullying, violence and
intimidation.
