Wivenhoe Neighbourhood Policing Team

 Spring 2007 Newsletter

PC Steve May retired from Essex Police after 30 years service at the end of January.  He worked in a number of stations in the north of Essex and over the years he became a well known face in many communities.

The last of these communities was Wivenhoe where for the last few years he has been the Community Police Officer. I am sure you will all join me in wishing him the best for the future and for his retirement.

PC Neil GibsonSo we now have PC Neil Gibson as Wivenhoe’s new Community Police Officer.

Neil joins us from St Andrews Neighbourhood Policing Team which is based at Ipswich Road Police station.  When Neil became a Police Officer 6 years ago he initially worked at Colchester Police station where he was a response officer covering the whole of the Colchester area.  He then moved to Ipswich Road Police station where he worked as part of the Community Policing Team which covered the north of the town.  In January 2006 the first NPT was implemented in St Andrews and St Anne’s and Neil was chosen to be part of that team.  At the beginning of March 2007, Neil joined the Wivenhoe NPT.

As I write this newsletter on the 11th March, Essex Police have received 123 incidents since the 1st January 2007 for Wivenhoe and the University alone.  These incidents include fallen trees, stray animals, obstructions, abandoned vehicles, abandoned 999 calls, assisting other agencies (e.g. ambulance, fire), mental health incidents, broken down vehicles, missing persons, concerns for persons welfare, attending sudden deaths, nuisance neighbours, nuisance youths, domestic incidents, intruder alarms, giving next of kin messages, doing enquiries for other forces.  As you can see it’s a very long list and that’s before including any crime!!!  Crime is low in Wivenhoe compared to other areas of Colchester.  But you can see we deal with many other types of situations apart from just crime.

Spring is in the air and the days are getting brighter and longer. So I am sure a lot of you will be getting your bikes out to take advantage of the good weather.  Whatever sort of bike you have it should be protected like any other piece of property.  Always invest in a good bike lock.  It is highly important to mark your bike so that it is identifiable to you.  So you may have a £300 bike, and you may be reluctant to scratch your postcode onto it, but the police need to be able to identify it if it is stolen.  We recover many bikes that may have been stolen and we can not reunite them with there owners as there are no identifying marks.

A good tip is to take a photo of your bike as we have a number of them reported to us as stolen and some owners can not give us the make of the bike or even the colour.  If you can not tell us what it looks like then how do you expect us to find it!!

PCSO Louise NevilleEnjoy the good weather and the Wivenhoe NPT look forward to seeing you around the town.
