Wivenhoe Neighbourhood Policing Team

Winter 2007/08 Newsletter

Over the past few months we have been experiencing various problems around the town that we have been keen to resolve.  The main problem has been nuisance youths especially at the railway station.  Over the summer the problem became progressively worse and this culminated when youths were obstructive and threatening towards police officers and had to subsequently be sprayed with CS gas to be arrested.  The feeling of intimidation and vulnerability affected commuters so much that many started to drive to Colchester railway station to travel from there.

To resolve the problem we have worked closely with One Railway and with British Transport Police.  One result of this working partnership is that two Mosquito devices have now been fitted at the railway station.  For those of you that don’t know, Mosquito’s are an ultrasonic device that let out a high pitched continuous tone that can only be heard by  youngsters, usually those under 20 years of age.  These have been highly successful so far as we have had very little anti-social behaviour and gathering of youths since the devices have been fitted.  British Transport Police have increased their patrolling of the railway station and we are working closely with them to ensure that all those who commit crime and anti social behaviour there are dealt with in the best way possible.

The level of crime in Wivenhoe remains low however there was a spate of car crime in September where vehicles had been entered and items stolen.  Can I please remind you all to remove all expensive items from your vehicles and to remember to lock them.  You would be amazed how many people don’t!!!

On a positive note I am pleased to tell you that we have a new Police Officer who has joined the Wivenhoe Neighbourhood Policing Team.  Becky Hanlon joined Essex Police at the beginning of the year after transferring from the City of London .  She is originally from Huddersfield and moved to Colchester early in 2007.  She has been working at Colchester Police Station for the last few months but joined Wivenhoe NPT in late October.  As she is new to the area she is still finding her way around but I know that you will all make her feel very welcome.  She is looking forward to meeting and working with the people of Wivenhoe so please make yourselves known to her.

During November we have had in excess of 230 coping stones stolen from the cemetery wall on Belle Vue Road . This type of theft has become a countywide problem with the price of reclaim rising. Anyone who has seen or heard anything that could be of use, no matter how small, please contact us.

PCSO Louise NevilleRecently we have had some reports of stone and apple throwing in and around the town.  This is causing some of our residents to become anxious, so far there has been no lasting damage. We have been unable to get any descriptions apart from 'kids in hoodies' so we need your help. If you are suffering from this nuisance or know anything that could help us to catch them please contact us on 01206 822082.

We wish all the residents of Wivenhoe a safe and Happy New Year.
