Wivenhoe Neighbourhood Policing Team

Autumn Newsletter 2006

During October there were a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Wivenhoe area.  Please ensure that your property is kept secure.  As well as your homes, this includes sheds, garages and vehicles.

Lighting is always a good crime prevention technique especially with the evenings drawing in.  So having lights on a timer and good exterior lighting is always a good deterrent.

Always ensure that doors are locked and windows are shut when your home is unoccupied or at night.  If valuables are kept in your vehicle keep them out of sight, this includes detachable satellite navigation systems.  Sometimes being a curious neighbour can have its advantages!!

If you see anything suspicious or something that just doesn’t seem right please give the Wivenhoe officers a call on 822082 or 07966 197245.  If it’s an emergency, then do not hesitate to call 999.

Over the Halloween period there were only 3 calls regarding nuisance youths.  I dealt with a group of approximately 30 youths on Halloween evening causing problems at the top of the King George V playing field.  These youths were soon dispersed when 2 police units and a dog unit attended.

Nuisance youth incidents over the October period have been dealt with by both Wivenhoe and Colchester officers.  At one incident 2 youths were arrested for being drunk and disorderly.  The message we want to send out is that anti-social behaviour and drunkenness will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly.

On 14th November, the first public meeting of the Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP) took place at the Congregational Church.  The short meeting was followed by a closed meeting of the Panel (this will be the format of future meetings - the next one is on 9th January at 2pm in the Wivenhoe Congregational Church Hall).

The NAP is led by Essex Police in partnership with Colchester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. The panel consists of representatives from the community, voluntary and statutory groups.  These include County, Borough and Town Councillors, representatives from the University, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, Executive Director of Colchester Borough Council, Community Safety Officer as well as Essex Police.  The aim of the panel is that members work positively and effectively together to identify and resolve community identified neighbourhood problems or issues that impact upon crime, anti social behaviour and the quality of life for the local community.  Public meetings will be held every other month and will alternate between daytime and evening meetings which will give the opportunity for all members of the community to attend and raise concerns.  We look forward to seeing you there.
