encourage use of Immobilise web site to register property
Everyone wants the latest technology - the most up-to-date mobile
phone, that new MP3 player, or a satellite navigation system for the car,
unfortunately so do thieves.
Securing your property throughout the festive season needs to be a top
priority. Essex Police is encouraging everyone to visit the website www.immobilise.com
which is a free website, where you can keep an online inventory of your
property. This not only helps you to get back your belongings in case of
theft, but will also help you fill out insurance claims, should the worst
happen.
The festive period can provide a great opportunity for thieves as everyone
is busy and people can forget to keep their belongings out of sight. To
reduce the chance of a theft happening to you, always remember to keep
hold of your mobile phone and do not flash it about, be particularly
careful if you are the owner of an i-Pod, as the white head phones are
always a clear sign of what you have in your pocket and always ensure that
your bag is securely fastened.
As an added method of security you can also key *#06# into your mobile
phone, this will then give you your IMEI number which is a unique 14 –
17 digit code. By registering your IMEI number you will be able to contact
your mobile phone operator with these details in the event of a theft, and
your phone will then be ‘disabled’ and rendered useless to thieves.
Sgt. Nathalie Carr from Territorial Policing said: “During the holidays
it is easy to become complacent about the new items we received at
Christmas; mobile phones, MP3 players etc. and the changes to our normal
routine means that people are not so careful. However by taking basic
safety precautions your new Christmas gifts will be safe.”
She continued “By registering your valuables with immobilise.com it will
stop thieves in their tracks, making it harder for them to re-sell your
possessions and increase the chance of your belongings being returned to
you.”
As well as securing the more obvious personal property such as a mobile
phone, laptop or satellite navigation system, you can also list antiques
and property in the home. The website is fast to register on, and if your
belongings do get stolen it will automatically be cross referenced with
the UK National Police Stolen Property Database. This will support the
police in stopping the circulation of stolen property and increase the
chances of you getting your belongings back.
