From The Wivenhoe Safety Neighbourhood Watch Chairman - December 2006

Unfortunately it is a known fact that at Christmas there are increased criminal activities.

Wivenhoe, despite its low crime rate and good community spirit, must be on extra alert for that suspicious vehicle or person in your street. If leaving your home and see such an individual please dial 999 stating 'there is a suspicious person loitering - could be a burglar.'

Before leaving your home, double check that all your doors and windows are locked - if you have two locks on the door use them both. Leave a light on and a radio is a good idea too.

Do not leave valuables on display in your car. If unloading your car - lock it each time, as it has been known for criminals to remove valuables whilst you are offloading the shopping in the house. Consider taking all that time and care in choosing presents and then they are stolen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When out shopping do not have all your money in one place. Do not leave your purse on top of your bag. Remember pick pockets can be aged 12 yrs to 70yrs.

Are you surprised? In Romford Market I witnessed a women in her sixties pushing in the crowd - I have a suspicious mind - she was stealing purses - a difficult arrest as she screamed she was being attacked. She received 4 years imprisonment as she was a professional 'pick-pocket'

Have a happy good safe crime free Christmas.

Please warn your neighbours and other friends to take care.

Cllr Ken Rogers
Community Safety Neighbourhood Watch Co-coordinator
