October 2002
The Committee have provided a detailed
report to Colchester Borough on improving road safety. This report deals
with concerns of pedestrians, cyclist and drivers of motor vehicles.
The Community Safety N.W. Group's October meeting on this issue attracted
50 members of the community who were concerned at the number of fatalities
and other accidents that had occurred in recent years.
"There are far more deaths on the roads in the UK than murders.
Therefore it is paramount that Community Safety N.W. Groups examine ways
of reducing these accidents that cause death and misery to many plus
create an added burden to our NHS."
I am pleased with the success of the meeting and satisfied action will be
taken on a number of issues raised.
Recent crime reported includes criminal damage to waste bins in our parks
and serious damage to a Jaguar car. There have also been break-ins to
cars, so beware and don't leave valuable items in view.
During one early evening, a lady occupant heard someone attempting to open
her rear door. Fortunately the door was locked. This is a good reminder
that during the dark evenings it is important to lock all doors.
Illegal drugs continue to be used in Wivenhoe by a small number of male
and females aged 15 - 18yrs. Mixed with alcohol, this provides a dangerous
concoction. Parents beware.
A man going door to door offering double glazing has been tackled. The man,
30yrs plus, stated he did this as he did not enjoy working in an office. I
advised this polite individual to consider joining the police! Somewhat
surprised he immediately gave up attempting to sell double glazing - he
has made enquiries to join the Essex Constabulary. It appears I made the
sell!
